Eli J. Finkel contributed to the New York Times this year with a Valentine’s suggestion he suggests may be the most valuable present a person may ever give his or her partner. The suggestion is a promise to write about relationship fights from a third-party perspective. The suggestion comes from a two-year study which took married couples of all ages and lengths of relationships and monitored their relationship status over the course of the study through four-month periodic reports of significant fights. In the second year, half of the group was then asked to write about these fights from the perspective of a neutral party who wanted what was best for the couple.
